Feeling Unmotivated in Your Job Search? Here’s What to Do

Job searching can be an exhilarating journey filled with opportunities and new beginnings. However, it’s also a journey that can often feel like a rollercoaster ride, complete with highs of excitement and lows of frustration and disappointment.

One of the most challenging aspects of this process is battling through periods of low motivation, especially if you’ve been turned down for a role you were particularly excited about.

Whether you’re just starting out or have been searching for a while, feeling unmotivated is entirely normal. The key is knowing how to overcome it and keep moving forward. In this blog, we’ll explore some practical tips to reignite your motivation and stay focused on your job search journey.

1. Reflect on Your Goals:

When motivation wanes, it’s essential to revisit your goals. Remind yourself why you started this journey. What are your career aspirations? Your priorities? What do you hope to achieve by landing your ideal job? Reflecting on, and re-assessing your goals can reignite your passion and provide the fuel to keep going, even when the going gets tough.

2. Break Tasks into Smaller Steps:

The job search process can feel overwhelming, especially when viewed as one giant task. Break it down into smaller, manageable steps. Create a daily or weekly to-do list with specific actions such as updating your resume, networking on LinkedIn, or researching potential employers. By focusing on one task at a time, you’ll make progress without feeling overwhelmed.

3. Establish a Routine:

Maintaining a routine can provide structure and stability during uncertain times. Set aside dedicated time each day for your job search activities. Whether it’s in the morning, afternoon, or evening, find a schedule that works for you and stick to it. Consistency breeds momentum, and soon, your routine will become second nature.

An example might be:

  • 9.30am: Check job boards and email alerts

  • 10am: Research companies you would like to work for and apply for jobs through website/send CV to HR.

  • 11am: Network on LinkedIn, comment on posts and connect with 5 people per day, ideally from the companies you have researched earlier.

  • 12pm: Stop.

Use the afternoon to pursue a hobby, learn a new skill, volunteer at a charity/pre-school, or study. Using this time means that, whatever happens in the morning, you finish the day feeling productive, which has a massive positive benefit to your mental health and general outlook on your job search experience.

4. Seek Support:

Don’t underestimate the power of support from friends, family, or your Tribe coach. Reach out to your network for encouragement, advice, or even just a listening ear. Joining job search groups or forums, like The Returners’ Hub can also connect you with individuals who are experiencing similar challenges. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey, and seeking support can help lighten the load.

5. Focus on Self-Care:

Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial, especially during stressful times like job hunting. Make self-care a priority by getting enough sleep, eating healthily, exercising regularly, and engaging in activities that bring you joy. Remember, a healthy mind and body are essential for maintaining motivation and resilience.

It also means you will perform better at interviews and increase the chances of you finding the job that is right for you sooner.

6. Celebrate Small Wins:

Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Landing an interview, receiving positive feedback on your CV, or making a valuable connection are all reasons to celebrate. Recognising your progress will boost your confidence and motivate you to keep pushing forward.

7. Stay Flexible and Adapt:

Job searching rarely follows a linear path, and setbacks are inevitable. Instead of dwelling on obstacles, view them as opportunities for growth and learning. Stay flexible in your approach and be open to adjusting your strategy as needed. Remember, every experience, whether positive or negative, brings you one step closer to your goal.

Feeling unmotivated during your job search is normal, but it’s essential not to let it derail your progress. By reflecting on your goals, establishing a routine, seeking support, focusing on self-care and celebrating small wins, you can reignite your motivation and stay on track towards finding the right job.

Remember, perseverance and resilience are key virtues in the journey towards career success. Keep pushing forward, and you’ll soon reap the rewards of your efforts.
