What is Self-Advocacy, and Why it is Important.

As professionals, navigating the workplace can sometimes be a challenging endeavour. From asserting our needs to regaining self-belief after setbacks or a career-break, the journey to success is often paved with obstacles that require a strong sense of self-advocacy.

In this guide, we will explore the importance of self-advocacy, tips for boosting self-belief, and strategies for a successful return to work.

Self-advocacy is the ability to speak up for oneself and assert personal needs and rights. In a professional setting, mastering self-advocacy is crucial for career advancement and personal growth. By advocating for what we need, we can create opportunities for ourselves, set boundaries, and build a fulfilling career.

  • Challenge Negative Self-Talk: Identify and challenge negative beliefs about yourself. You can use physical cues, like pinching yourself, or firm ‘NO’ also works. Flip your negative into a neutral or positive straight away. “I’m rubbish at this,” becomes “I’m new to this (or I haven’t done this in a while), but I’m going to learn how and become great at it.”

  • Set Realistic Goals: Break down larger goals into manageable and more achievable steps. You’re not going to build a house in a day, start with the foundations and then the walls. Make sure you celebrate every small victory to boost confidence and acknowledge the fact you’re doing an amazing job!

  • Seek Support : Surround yourself with a positive support system that encourages and believes in your abilities. In other words, find the right people who are going to push you forward. We all have loved ones who encourage us to run to the safe space, or even hold us back. Now is the time to nudge them to other parts of your life. Right now you need your cheerleaders, and they might be friends, family, mentors, ex-colleagues or your Tribe coach. Tell them they are in the group, and what you need from them and then enjoy the support!

  • Reflect on Learnings: After a setback, take time to reflect on lessons learned and strengths gained from the experience. Every mistake or failure is a learning opportunity, so make sure you make the most of it. By doing this, you will grow faster and will win the support and respect of your manager and colleagues.

  • Set Clear Objectives: Define clear objectives for your return to work, outlining specific steps to help you achieve your professional goals.

  • Seek Mentorship : Engage with mentors, colleagues, or your Tribe coach, who can provide guidance and support as you navigate the inevitable challenges at work.

In the fast-paced professional world, the journey to self-advocacy and self-belief is ongoing. Embracing these principles not only empowers us in our current roles but also prepares us for future opportunities and challenges.

Incorporating these steps you can enhance your workplace skills and elevate your careers. Remember, self-belief is the cornerstone of success, and by advocating for yourself, you pave the way for a fulfilling and impactful professional journey.

Remember, the key to unlocking your full potential lies in mastering self-advocacy and self-belief. Take the first step today towards a more empowered and fulfilling professional life.
